My Mississippi Memory

Summer heat melts everything
Slows your actions
Slows your speech
Laying on the floor in front of Mamaw's fan
The hot air lulls me to sleep
I awaken to the sounds of a rumbling engine
Papaw has come to take me away
Picking muscadines
Feeding the catfish
Tending to the garden
Tomatoes and watermelons ripe for the pickin'
Mosquitoes buzz like ariplanes
Back home to Momma and Daddy
Supper is hot and heavy just like the weather
As night falls on the house
I move outside
Sitting on the backporch
Glass of sweet tea in hand
Frogs singing
Crickets joining in
Just another day in the country
